in What We Do

Championing the exploitation of PbP

We explore innovative applications of PbP for the benefit of society and communities. In doing so, we’re looking at ways in which PbP can encourage open and frank discussions about societal woes. We’re looking at ways in which the aspects of PbP that encourage teamwork and respect for one another can be tapped to create opportunities for positive intercultural dialogue. We’re trying to find ways in which the entrepreneurial spirit that was kindled into our co-founders in large part due to the daunting challenge of building a PbP game can be fostered in others. PbP creative writing games don’t just end up with finished stories and good reads, they also create open communities where each individual is valued. As our societies combat digital exclusion, PbP offers a practical means to do so, whilst at the same time bringing individuals closer to literature.

A method waiting to be harnessed beyond games…

Play-by-post ( PbP) is a method that can be applied in many different contexts and circumstances, which can be used to reach any number of objectives. Whilst it arose as a method to enable web-based collaborative writing and role-playing, its ability to awaken and refine ‘communication abilities,’ ‘social skills’, ‘entrepreneurial skills’ help turn the Internet into a powerful ally in the struggle to achieve a fairer, more socially inclusive society. This is achieved by providing activities in which the individual is encouraged to work with others, to understand the experiences and points of views of others, to explore social issues through writing, to learn to express one’s own fears, aspirations, and opinions in non-confrontational ways. At New Worlds Project, we’re keen to explore ways to adapt the method to help individuals acquire the skills to empower themselves and their communities.
