Championing the exploitation of PbP… We promote the uptake of PbP in our education systems. New Worlds Project was incorporated upon the realisation that young writers participating in PbP activities were learning to become better writers able to use sophisticated writing techniques to enrich their storylines. We are currently in the process of piloting projects which bring PbP, creative writing, and the Internet together in a bid to revolutionise classrooms and rekindle student interest in lifelong learning. Our first pilot project took place in the United States, in a Utah community college, New Worlds Project used PbP in a creative writing course offered to adults with encouraging results. In Europe, a consortium composed of some of the leading universities in the field of game-based learning may soon have the opportunity to pilot a similar project.
Encouraging game-based learning... New Worlds Project is working with academic experts in the field of game-based learning to better understand the potential of Play-by-Post for academic application. Research is increasingly proving the value of game-based learning as a means to solve problems related to the Google Generation’s need for more stimulus and interaction whilst learning. To meet the challenges of the Knowledge Society, schools are being instructed to teach students how to be more creative, more entrepreneurial, as well as more critical. New Worlds Project’s own creative writing projects resulted in young participants learning to write better – it was this realisation that led to New Worlds Project’s incorporation.
Testing the method in academic contexts across continents... In the United States, we’re pilot testing PbP in adult classrooms at community colleges. Nalnath by New Worlds Project is proving the potential of PbP in creative writing classrooms. Students, led by a New Worlds Project moderator, have over the course of several weeks been converted to PbP. We’re currently in the process of wrapping the pilot project up and will be releasing several articles on the experience – both from the point of view of the moderator, as well as that of the students. With Nalnath by New Worlds Project, we’ve shown that given the right training – an interesting, and energised classroom situation can be created using PbP.
In Europe, a consortium of secondary schools, professional colleges, and higher education institutions are teaming up with us in the hopes of undertaking an ambitious European-level education project. We’re hoping to pilot test PbP in different classroom situations, as well as pilot test PbP in a massive cross-border project. In this project we’ll be demonstration not only the potential of PbP within traditional classroom settings, we’ll also highlight how this method can provide a working method for school twinning projects across borders.
Pilot testing in the hopes of perfecting a new pedagogic approach Once pilot testing is completed, New Worlds Project will be equipped with the knowledge to provide valuable services to educators throughout the world. We intend to support educators through the entire process of preparing and implementing classroom projects which employ the PbP method. We believe that through professional training, hosting of technological requirements, and active support of educators, we can promote the uptake of PbP in day-to-day education.
We’re convinced that the PbP method will increasingly be seen as an innovative method that helps create positive partnerships between creative pursuits, critical learning, and digital literacy. With these three pillars being exercised during a PbP activity, students will become better able to handle the demands being placed upon them when they enter the labour of market of contemporary knowledge-based societies.
