What is Play-by-Post ( PbP)?

The attachment to this page is a PowerPoint Presentation Show demonstrating Play-by-Post in its RPG context, and in its proposed academic context. Feel free to download it to get a visual experience.

Play-by-Post, as its name suggests, refers to a method in which individuals play by posting on web-based discussion forums. Play-by-Post enables individuals to work on projects together. The web-based discussion forums serve as the central, shared repertoire for the contributions made by each individual. Because the discussion forums are web-based, individuals from across the world can contribute to storylines. Joint stories can involve authors from the four corners of the world.

Play-by-Post originates from the online text-based role-playing community, in this community Play-by-Post is a method that allows individual writers (who play the role of characters they have created) to write joint stories which feature their characters.

The contributions of each individual are signed to the name of the author, thereby ensuring that each portion of the joint stories can be properly accredited. The original author (as well as the administrators of the discussion forum) can also edit or delete their posts at any moment thereby encouraging a trial and error approach.
